We’ve had warmer weather this past week – great for summer crops, but not so good for those that prefer cool spring weather. CSA week 3 gives us peas in the shell today! I’m fairly certain this is the end of the short season; peas hate the heat. (Maybe I am […]

CSA week 2
Well, well, well! It’s CSA week 2, and today’s box brings us greens – 3 kinds of lettuce and kale – but also radishes, broccoli, potatoes, onion, and, surprise, strawberries! Those berries are an unexpected treat. While the last part of May was sunny and warm, the temperatures have become […]
2018 CSA Season Begins
Here in SE Michigan, we’ve just begun the season for local produce. Think that’s late? Where I live, the frost free date is May 29 – so I count myself lucky to get a basket of produce in early June. We participate in a CSA from Van Houtte Farms in Armada, […]
City Commons week 20: all done
It’s the end of the garden: our CSA’s last distribution. We’ve already had our first frost, and it’s time for the farmers to let their fields rest. I’ll still have fresh local crops – I’ll just have to get them from my local Farmers Market.
City Commons CSA week 13
We’ve had rain and hot weather, which the plants love. This week, our CSA box has even more ripe red tomatoes (hooray). We also have collards, purple cabbage, kale, bell peppers, arugula, garlic, and lovely apples.
City Commons CSA week 12
Hot weather returns, and makes the farm’s tomato plants very productive! We have a double helping of ripe red tomatoes this week (hooray). We also have basil, sage, garlic, Swiss chard, radishes, multicolor carrots, and yellow (wax) beans.
City Commons CSA week 11
Our weather has been cool these last few days. Summer is far from over; we have more hot and sunny days to come. It’s clear, though, that the summer harvest is destined to end, perhaps in a glorious abundance of ripe tomatoes any week now. Come on, tomatoes! This week our […]
City Commons CSA week 10
The hot weather this week has been good for summer crops. I keep telling myself that while I hate hot humid weather, the tomatoes love it, so I should count my blessings. This week, the basket has tomatoes and cherry tomatoes, a definite bonus – along with carrots, kale, daikon radish, collards, cucumbers, sage, […]
City Commons CSA week 9
Let me talk about what’s in the basket. This week, we have dinosaur kale (cavolo nero), carrots, fennel, 2 adorable little eggplants, garlic, and a basket of ripe tomatoes.
City Commons CSA week 8
More tomatoes this week! I am definitely happy, because we also have fresh garlic, which means I see various pasta dishes coming soon.
City Commons CSA week 5
Last year, most of the Tuesday CSA pickups were done in the rain. Today was the first rainy Tuesday this year, with scattered showers all afternoon. Clearly, though, the rain has been good for the plants! Today’s box held turnip greens, red leaf lettuce, fennel, beets, eggplant, zucchini, garlic, and […]
City Commons CSA week 4
It’s Tuesday, so it’s time to collect the CSA box at the farm! This week my haul is very green: fennel, kale, green cabbage, 2 kinds of lettuce, sage, green tomatoes (swoon) and the first heads of fresh garlic. I’m already thinking of what I might do with this. Hm, so many […]
