We’ve had warmer weather this past week – great for summer crops, but not so good for those that prefer cool spring weather. CSA week 3 gives us peas in the shell today! I’m fairly certain this is the end of the short season; peas hate the heat. (Maybe I am a pea? I’m short and round, I hate heat, but I’m not green… hm.) Besides the peas, the box holds:
- lettuce, 3 large heads – green looseleaf, red romaine, and green oak leaf
- bulb onions
- beets
- carrots
- zucchini (how did it have time to get so big this early in the season?)
- kohlrabi,
- large bunch of basil
- garlic scapes
This box makes me very happy. Not only can I make fantastic salads, I have nice big lettuce leaves for wraps of all kinds. I’ll make pesto with that basil, and a different batch with the garlic scapes. Chocolate zucchini bread. Fresh peas with mint. Beets with feta and walnuts. There are a lot of things I can do with garlic scapes – that deserves a post all on its own, which I promise I’ll deliver later this week.
Come back to this post during the coming week – as I post recipes using this box of produce, I’ll add links here. Happy eating!
