You may have noticed a distinct lack of updates on the CSA boxes during June. It’s not that the boxes stopped – our farmers at Beaverland Farms in Detroit have been steadily supplying us with fantastic produce! Just look at some of the boxes in past weeks, and then I’ll tell you all about CSA 2023 week 10.
You can see the progression of the season from the abundance of leafy greens in the spring, through the first of the peas and early turnips, on to garlic scapes, and – this week – the first cucumber, the first onions. July 1 marked week 10 of our CSA distributions, and this week the box held:
- kale
- beets
- mixed lettuce
- garlic scapes
- sugar snap peas
- carrots
- onions
- cucumber
The abundance of fresh carrots has been a special delight; they make a great snack with hummus. I expect I’ll make a variation with white beans and garlic scapes. Let’s see, what might I do with the goodies from CSA 2023 week 10?
- kale chips
- white bean and garlic scape dip
- garlic scape pesto (another worthwhile dip, and this also freezes well)
- a big Greek salad with rosemary-roasted beets
- various stir-fries with those lovely peas
- carrot ginger soup
- a small batch of carrot & radish pickles
Follow the season with me, and I’ll show off my CSA box, including ideas of how I might use all the good stuff. Feel free to comment or ask questions!
